It is a surf hostel

The wave is at
the end of the street.

Sayulita’s main break is a hundred steps away and forgiving enough to stand up on. When it is crowded, flat or too small, the van goes somewhere better.

Every day

The surf trip

From $25, leaving most mornings.

A trip goes out most days to whichever break is working — most often La Lancha, twenty minutes down the road, where a ten-minute walk through the jungle puts you on a long, clean right that beginners can ride all the way in.

Where it actually goes is decided on the morning, by the swell. That is not vagueness; it is the difference between a good session and a wasted one. Ask at reception the night before and you will know where you are waking up for.

Bed, board and a trip together
  • Surf tripPer person, transport there and back.from $25
  • Board hirePer day. Foamies and longboards.from $6

Trips run subject to the swell and to enough people wanting to go. What a given morning includes — which break, how long, whether a board comes with it — is confirmed at reception the evening before, because promising it a month in advance from a website would be making it up.

Within half an hour

Five breaks,
one small town.

What is around Sayulita, who each one suits, and roughly how long it takes to get there.

  • Sayulita main break

    The end of the street

    On foot

A soft, forgiving right that breaks over sand in front of the town. It is where nearly everybody in Sayulita caught their first wave, and it is busy for exactly that reason. Best early, before the day trippers and the rental boards arrive.

    • Beginner-friendly
    • Works all year
  • La Lancha

Punta de Mita, through the jungle

    20 min

A long, clean right reached by a ten-minute walk down a jungle path from the highway. Peels for a long way and stays friendly at most sizes, which is why it is the trip beginners are sent on. Bring water and shoes you do not mind getting sandy.

    • Beginner-friendly
    • Works all year
  • El Anclote

    Punta de Mita village

    30 min

A slow, rolling right off the point at the end of the bay, with restaurants along the sand behind it. Gentle enough to learn on and long enough that a good wave feels like an achievement. Works best on a winter swell.

    • Beginner-friendly
    • Best in winter
  • Burros

The road to Punta de Mita

    25 min

Another long right point, mellower and usually emptier than Sayulita. A good second stop on a day when the town is crowded and the swell has enough size to wrap in.

    • Beginner-friendly
    • Best in winter
  • San Pancho

    The next town north

    12 min

A punchy beach break with a shore break that does not negotiate. Not a beginner wave and not a lesson spot — go when you have a few weeks behind you, or go for the beach and the tacos and watch.

    • Experienced surfers
    • Best in summer

Boards

Rent from the house

From $6 a day, and free if you are volunteering with us.

There are boards at the hostel — soft-tops for a first week and longboards for after that — so you do not have to negotiate with the rental stands on the beach every morning. Take one down, bring it back, and rinse it off in the yard.

Good to know

Can I learn to surf here?

Sayulita is one of the friendliest places on this coast to stand up for the first time: a sand bottom, a slow right and a lot of people in the same boat. We rent the boards and can point you at an instructor in town — we do not teach the lessons ourselves.

When is the surf best in Sayulita?

There is something to ride all year. The bigger, more consistent swell arrives with the summer and autumn; the winter is smaller, cleaner and the easiest time to learn. The point breaks up towards Punta de Mita come alive on a winter swell.

Do I need my own board?

No. Boards rent from $6 a day at the hostel, and there are stands on the beach as well. If you are volunteering with us, the boards are free.

How far is the beach?

About a hundred steps. You can see whether it is worth getting up for on the way to breakfast.
